Here In My Head

The tap dancers are dancing in my mind once again
As cheerleaders stand cheering them on from the other side
And the understudy is studying deep underneath
And practising his sword fight with the headless horseman
They are racing to get back to his beautiful bride
The horses are getting tired and bearing their teeth

The jesters are laughing aloud with their own bad jokes
Whilst snakes slither down their ladders onto the grass
And the detective is mysteriously murdered
As the murderer hides the dagger under their cloak
Wiping the incriminating blood from his eyeglass
And the Judge's final sentence is made and ordered

In the courtyard the castle soldiers are standing guard
Ready to defend the country from foreign attack
Worn out nurses are caring for the wounded men
As the diggers prepare plots in a nearby graveyard
Dashing highwaymen are poised for their next hijack
Gunpowder explodes from cannons as the clock strikes ten

Battlefields are scenes of immense courage and bravery
But blood paints the brown earth into a crimson river
As metal armoury fends off slings and arrows
And war's history is confined to a soldiers memory
Cold blowing winds can make warm beating hearts quiver
The dead are revered and remembered as heroes

My mind reads like an open wounded storybook
Tales from your battlefield all reside there now
All my other memories have disappeared and fled
I think my technicolour thoughts have been overlooked
Your voice calling out even stronger somehow
A reoccurring scream as you fight here in my head.
